Spreading on the territory of 25.173 km 2 , with more than two thirds of it under hilly and mountainous terrain with over than 90 peaks and hills higher than 2000 meters above the sea level , of which the highest one is Golem Korab with 2.753 meters, with over 50 lakes of which the largest one is the Ohrid Lake with an area of 349 km 2 , with great number of rivers of which the one with the longest flow is the River Vardar – 301 km, with 4 national parks and with approximately 2 million inhabitants , Republic of Macedonia is a country that you have to visit and experience.
By plane
The Skopje Airport (phone: +389 2 3148 333) is only 15 km far from the center. There are regular and charter flights from every major European city to Skopje and Ohrid by domestic and foreign air companies (MAT, Adria Airways, Austrian Airlines, Olympic, Cross air, Turkish Airlines, JAT, etc.).
Other near airports are: in Sofia (Bulgaria), which is 250 km away from Skopje and Thessaloniki (Greece) 260 km. There are regular bus lines from Sofia to Skopje twice a day. Also the airports in Ljubljana (Slovenia), Zagreb (Croatia) and Belgrade (Yugoslavia) can be used for connection. (Note: some countries nationals may need transit visas for Bulgaria and Yugoslavia).
By bus
If you chose to travel by bus, connections are available from the major cities in Europe (Brussels, Vienna, Malme, Sofia, Istanbul, Belgrade). Those that will travel from, or through Germany can contact the travel agency Deutsche Touring, found in most of the cities, which has buses to Macedonia twice a week; those from Austria can contact Europe travel agency. (Note: If you travel through Yugoslavia check whether you need a visa!)
By train
You can use the connections from Vienna, Budapest, Ljubljana, Zagreb, Belgrade, Thessaloniki or Athens. They arrive at Central Railway Station in Skopje (phone: +389 2 3164255) every day.
VISA ARRANGEMENTS
The citizens of the following countries don't need visa to enter the Republic of Macedonia:
Austria, Belgium, Bosnia, Botswana, Croatia, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, United Kingdom, USA, Yugoslavia.
Since 15.01.2003 visas are no longer issued on the Macedonian border.
